In Kindergarten we like to hatch Ducklings each year in our class incubator. This year since we are apart we will do it by watching it together on a video. First we will watch an award winning book called
Make Way For Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
In our classroom incubator it usually takes 2 days for all of our ducklings eggs to hatch. This video is nice because they have fast forward it so you can see it clearly and quickly. This is our introduction to the life cycle of the duckling.
Superkid's Reading Lesson
Page 20-23
Review the Memory Word and decodable words from the story.
Write these out for your Kinder:
was mess boss rabbit dragon dentist planets gumdrops pretzels
Tell children that these words are in the story they are going to read. Point out that the first word is their new Memory Word. Have them read was with you. Tell them that was is underlined in pink in the story to help them remember to read it without blending the sounds for the letters. Help children blend the sounds to read the other words. Have them read the words aloud several more times until they can read smoothly and without hesitation. Ask which words mean more than one of something. (planets, gumdrops, pretzels)
Discuss the story title and activate prior knowledge. Have children turn to page 20. Read the story title, “The Superkids’ Album,” aloud with them. Explain that an album is a book of photographs. Tell them photo is a shorter word for photograph. Discuss with children photo albums they have at home or have seen other places.
Tell children that the Superkids’ album includes pictures of fun things the Superkids did in their club. Give them a few minutes to look at the pictures on pages 20–23.
Discuss text features. Have children turn back to page 20. Point out the two sets of sentences below each picture. Explain that photo albums often include captions, words or sentences that explain what is shown in a picture. Point out that each picture in the Superkids’ album has one caption that describes the picture correctly and one that does not. Tell children that they will read both captions and then figure out which is the correct caption for each picture.
Use Student Book pages 20–23 and white crayons. Help set a purpose for reading. Tell children they can use the pictures in “The Superkids’ Album” and what they remember from previous stories about the Superkids’ club to figure out which captions belong in the photo album.
Have children look at first picture and discuss what is happening in it. Then ask children to read aloud the two captions under the picture. Have your child say which caption they think is correct and why. Help them support their answers using details in the picture and details they recall from the related story. Tell them to circle the correct caption with a white crayon. Discuss why the other caption is not correct.
Repeat the procedure for the remaining pictures and captions in the story.
